Help For Impotence Problems

Jaroslav J. Marik, M.D., is the Medical Director of the renowned Tyler Medical Clinic, founded in the early 1940's by Edward T. Tyler, M.D., in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Marik established the In Vitro Fertilization program at the Tyler Clinic in 1983, which was the second such program in the western United States. The clinic houses the Westwood Cryobank, a continuation of the cryobank opened at the Tyler Medical Clinic more than fifty years ago. Perhaps the nation's most experienced cryobank, the Westwood Cryobank routinely performs chromosomal analysis to detect genetic abnormalities, along with its primary purpose of banking semen for fertilization. Dr. Marik was one of the first physicians in Southern California to perform diagnostic and therapeutic laparoscopy. In addition, Dr. Marik achieved one of the first successful conceptions using the G.I.F.T. (Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer) procedure.

Viagra (Sildenafil Citrate)

Along with fertility issues, Dr. Marik also addresses issues of sexual dysfunction and impotency. According to Dr. Marik, Viagra is the state-of-the-art prescription drug for dealing with impotency. On March 27, 1998, Viagra was approved by the Food and Drug Administration as the first oral pill to treat impotence, a dysfunction that affects millions of men in the United States. Unlike previously approved treatments for impotence, Viagra does not directly cause penile erections, but affects the response to sexual stimulation. The drug acts by enhancing the smooth muscle relaxant effects of nitric oxide, a substance that is normally released locally in response to sexual stimulation. This smooth muscle relaxation allows blood to enter and pool in the penis, enabling an erection.

Viagra is manufactured by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, located in New York City. The product was approved by the FDA less than six months after submission. Viagra is taken orally and is known as a phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. By inhibiting the PDE5 enzyme, which is found mainly in the penis, Viagra allows the chemical produced during sexual stimulation, cyclic GMP, to persist. The longer cyclic GMP persists, the better the chance for increased blood flow and, thereby, an erection. According to reports released in May 1996, the success rate of Viagra was between 65% to 88%, compared to 39% for those subjects receiving a placebo.
