Male Breast Cancer
Although it occurs infrequently, breast cancer can affect men as well as women. It is estimated that less than 1% of all breast carcinomas occur in men. Predisposing risk factors appear to include radiation exposure, estrogen administration, and diseases associated with hyperestrogenism, cirrhosis, or Klinefelter’s syndrome.
There has been much discussion concerning inherited genetic mutations. These mutations, specifically in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, are believed to increase the risk for developing different types of cancer (e.g. breast, colon, ovarian, and prostate). BRCA1 and BRCA2 are genes which normally help to prevent breast cancer. However, when they mutate they lose their protective role.
The genetic link with breast cancer in men is still debated. However, BRCA2 has been shown to have possible association with breast cancer in men, especially if they have a number of female relatives with cancer of the breast. BRCA1 seems to be relatively unrelated to male breast cancer.
