- Risks of In Vitro Fertilization -

In Vitro Fertilization is a complicated procedure, and there are a number of risks involved.

Stimulation Related Risks

Occasionally ovulation stimulation can lead to ovarian hyperstimulation, which can range from mild abdominal bloating and tenderness to, in rare cases, liver and kidney disorders.  Other risks include local reactions to injections and allergic reaction to medications.

Retrieval Related Risks

In rare cases, bleeding from the ovary can be caused by the needle used to retrieve the eggs, although most needle sticks are self-healing.  Other risks include infection and reactions to the anesthesia or sedation.

Embryo Transfer Related Risks

The transfer of the embryos to the uterus can cause mild cervical and uterine irritation.

Multiple and Ectopic Pregnancy

In general, multiple embryos are transferred during Embryo Transfer to increase the chances of successful implantation. As a result of this, the risk of having multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, etc.) is much higher than in normal pregnancies, depending on the number of  embryos transferred.    IVF also produces an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, or implantation of the embryo in the fallopian tubes.
