Balanced Translocation is present if a person has the correct number of chromosomes, but their pieces are joined up incorrectly. The problem can be inherited from one parent and then balanced out by the other. If both partners have similar problems, recurrent miscarriage may occur. If patients experience repeated miscarriage without satisfactory explanation, examination of chromosomes is in order. When balanced translocation/BT is suspected, both parents can have chromosomal examination to confirm the suspicion. Sometimes translocations can be difficult to confirm. In cases of repeated miscarriage, frequently called habitual abortion, the products of conception/placenta or fetus or both should be tested for this genetic problem. It is more likely to be confirmed in the products of conception. If translocation is documented, the parents have a good chance to avoid another miscarriage from happening. This is done through a new technique called Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD). An early embryo is examined, cultured to approximately 8 cell stage. One cell is carefully removed and its chromosomal make-up examined by Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH). Only embryos confirmed to be normal are then implanted into the uterus.
