Many bacteria cause urinary tract infections and inflammation of the kidney, ureter, urinary bladder and/or urethra. Symptoms of these conditions can be sometimes mild, sometimes severe. If a patient experiences symptoms of infection and inflammation related to the urinary tract, bacteriuria should be suspected and the urine tested for the presence of offending bacteria for determination of sensitivity of proper antibiotics. In females, bacteriuria is frequently accompanied by inflammation/infection of the vagina, vulva and uterine cervix.
