A group, also called genus, species, or strain, of bacteria is used chiefly in non-technical writing and in news broadcasts. Bacteria have been subdivided into Eubacteria and Eukaryotes. A group called Archaebacteria is frequently considered distinct from Eubacteria and Eukaryotes. Eubacteria can be controlled by interference with their protein synthesis. Many of the bacterial antibiotics do eliminate or change the synthesis of protein, but do not affect the infected host/person. Bacteria are further subdivided according to their morphology, into cocci, bacilli, etc. Also, another differentiation of bacteria is provided by their affinity to Gram stain. The cell wall of bacteria either accepts the Gram stain – Gram positive – or do not stain – Gram negative. This information is important in order to decide the appropriate antibiotic before the specific culture will provide information on the specific strain and its sensitivity to various antibiotics. Many bacteria live in or on a human organism without causing any symptoms. Presence of the others causes somewhat severe symptoms every time the system is exposed to them.
