The blood group of the population is tested for various blood types, these being A, B, AB, and O. Another factor that is investigated is RH, which can be positive or negative. Women of reproductive age and their partners should be tested for this particular factor, because if an RH negative woman conceives a pregnancy by an RH positive mate immunization can happen. During the first pregnancy it is usually mild, but it can accentuate through miscarriage, stillbirth or live birth. If not treated, successful pregnancies can lead to intrauterine death of another RH positive fetus. The production of RH antibodies can be checked throughout the pregnancy, and if positive, treated with Rhogam. The medication also should be injected shortly after delivery of an Rh positive baby. There are no known side effects to Rhogam.
