Condition of having an abnormal number of chromosomes. There may be one or several chromosomes missing (this condition is called monoploidy), or additional chromosomes present. When it’s three of a particular type it’s called triploidy. When four chromosomes are present, it is called tetraploidy. Many of these chromosomal abnormalities are not compatible with life. PGD/preimplantation genetic diagnosis enables us to check on chromosomal abnormality at the time of in vitro fertilization, thus preventing serious deformities in newborns.
