Adrenal Corticotropic (Adrenocorticotropic) Hormone (ACTH) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland to stimulate the adrenal glands. Abnormal levels may lead to fertility problems. It is chemically a peptide hormone that is produced by the anterior pituitary gland. Besides others it stimulates the adrenal cortex to secrete glucocorticoid hormones, which help cells synthesise glucose, catabolize proteins, mobilize free fatty acids and inhibit inflammation in allergic responses. The proper function can be examined by adrenocorticotropic (ACTH) suppression test.
